今日はUNIT11の「Young couple choose baby girls」をテーマにした宿題のチェックからです。イギリスでは5,000ポンド支払って、赤ちゃんの男女を選ぶ治療が行われているとの記事でしたが、普通に知らなかったので少し驚きました。

「Girls are much sweeter than boys and they're more clever too.」と比較級を使っています。comparativesとsuperlativesは話せるようになりました。

その後はUNIT12の続きでしたが、2ページは「studing at home」にして、リスニングを行いました。最近はテーマだけ確認して、listeningは必ずやって、speakingはは自分が話す機会が多くして、残りは自習といった感じです。

今日のリスニングのテーマはroad rageでした。road rageとは「angly and violent behaviour towards other driver.」で、道路上での喧嘩を意味します。欧米圏では自動車の小競り合いが起こりやすく、怒鳴り声が聞こえるそうです。

怒っている女性が話しているので、早口で聞き取りにくかったです。「one more」をお願いした後に、「I did't understand why they laughed?」と説明も求めましたので、問題は解決しましたが、後で自宅で聞きなおしました。

続いて、UNIT13の「道順の教え方と答え方」です。シェーンのレッスンで英語力は間違いなく上がっているのですが、テキストの内容は日常生活とはちょっと離れています。そのため、今回はシーンが使い勝手が良さそうです。

「Where is James Street?」「I'm looking for NatWest Bank.」「Is there a nice The Chandos pub around here?」「How do I get to Covent Garden station?」と道の聞き方もいろいろあります。

「Go straight along this street and then turn left at Bedford Street.」
「Then tale the second right. Go straight on the NatWest Bank is on your left.」
「Go to the end of the Trafalgar Square, and then turn right.」
「Go past the shurch and post office, go across the road and it's there, on the corner.」
「Go up Southamptoon Row and then go through Covent Garden Market.」
「Then keep going, past the Opera House and then go up James Street.」
「You'll see it on the left.」

道案内の基本は、真っ直ぐ行く「go straight」、右に曲がる「turn right」、通り過ぎる「go past」、上る「go up」で充分です。道案内は海外旅行で何回も使うことになるでしょう。

目的地に着いたら、「Shop is on your left.」「Shop is there.」「You'll see Shop it on the left.」で完了です。ここまで覚えると、外国人に「Excuse me. I lose my way. Is there a Tokyo station.」などと言われてみたいです。
